The planning of development projects can be broken down into key areas using the project cycle. This ensures that you have considered all aspects of planning, implementing, monitoring, evaluation and communication before starting work on your project.
Good planning, monitoring and evaluation enhance the contribution your project can have in your partner community. It is important to realise that your project will be one of many factors that are influencing the development of the community you are working with. In order to understand the other factors at play and where your intervention will fit in, a situational analysis must be carried out.
Once a situational analysis or needs assessment has been completed it is recommended that the overriding goal for the project is agreed with all stakeholders. This goal will be used to define the activities the project will need to develop in order to meet it. It is important to clarify the expected outputs and desired outcomes of each activity and how they will contribute to meeting your objectives.
It is essential that monitoring, evaluation and impact assessment are built into the planning process from the beginning. This will ensure successes and failures can be highlighted and learnt from. It is important to understand if your chosen activities produced the intended outputs and if these outputs produced the intended outcomes.
Project deliery grants are available from the Wales Africa Community Links programme (WACL). You would need to demonstrate why you need a small grant and the activities and outcomes you would expect to achieve with a small grant.
